Big Discounts Help Fast Start To Holiday Shopping
Well I hope everyone enjoyed their four day holiday weekend and got some of their holiday shopping out of the way as well. I am proud to say that we did not participate in this years early morning craziness that has become a tradition for so many retailers at this time of year. Which is to open their doors at midnight or sometime in the wee hours of early morning to entice the bargain hunters and hardcore shoppers into starting their holiday shopping off with a discounted bang.
With the economy in the doldrums of despair for pretty much the entire year it was going to be a hard call to predict how the average shopper was going to turn out this year. Well it looks like based on the early numbers from the four day holiday weekend that the average shopper has returned in force, at least at the start of the shopping season. Turns out that retailers have touched a lot of the right notes for consumers in the items they were discounting as shoppers churned out a big 7% increase over last years money spent in the same 4 days.
That’s a great start and some welcome good news to retailers but analyst are still predicting a tighter holiday season of shopping. The status of the economy being the main factor but another key element that may not get noticed by most shoppers is that this year we have five less days to get our holiday shopping done in and those five days are certain to hurt retailers big time. There will also be an expected rise in the amount of shopping being done online as I write this we are in the middle of the biggest online shopping day of the year which is Cyber Monday. Cyber Monday got it’s recognition a few years ago as the first full day that people get back to work from the holiday
and get online to do more holiday shopping. Giving another big boost to retailers for the start of their sales season.
Some analyst are still predicting a bigger number being spent over last year despite all the signs of a negative economy and 5 less days to spend our money. On a personal level I know our family is definitely spending less over last year and it is a conscience effort based to cut corners and save more this year. What about your wallet? Spending more or less this year over last?

[...] Shop until you drop used to be the expression that would be music to the ears of all retailers. It’s a tune however that most shopaholics will not be singing for quite some time. Despite the unexpected good news that came out last month regarding a sudden rise in the numbers for retailers. The prognosis for the future in retail numbers is still looking pretty grim for most retailers. [...]
